LONGVIEW, Wash. — The longest winning streak of the season for the Bend Elks ended in short order Friday night.

Two Cowlitz pitchers shut out the Elks on six hits, and the Black Bears claimed a 2-0 win in a West Coast League game that lasted just an hour and 55 minutes.

Bend had won its previous three games to open the second half of the WCL season.

Dalton Mitchell’s home run in the sixth inning broke a scoreless tie, and Cowlitz added a run in the seventh. The Elks had a chance to get even in the eighth inning when Ian Nowak and Tristen Alvarez both singled, but Black Bears starter Zach Heaton worked out of the jam. Cowlitz reliever J.T. Penick struck out the side in order in the ninth to complete the shutout.

A solid pitching effort by starter Daniel Naughton kept Bend in the game. The right-hander from Pendleton allowed eight hits, struck out two and walked one over six innings in the opening game of a three-game series at the Black Bears’ Story Field.
