Ex-Blazer sentenced for charity fraud — Former Portland Trail Blazer Kermit Washington has been sentenced to six years in federal prison for spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in charity donations on vacations, shopping sprees and plastic surgery for his girlfriend. The U.S. attorney’s office said in a news release that the 66-year-old Washington was also ordered Monday to pay nearly $970,000 in restitution after pleading guilty in November to making a false statement in a tax return and aggravated identity theft. Washington played for several NBA teams in the 1970s and 1980s, including the Blazers from 1979 to 1982. He is best known for throwing a punch that fractured Houston Rockets player Rudy Tomjanovich’s face and left him unconscious during a 1977 game. Washington was playing for the Los Angeles Lakers at the time.

Former OSU great Shelton dies — Lonnie Shelton, who starred at Oregon State and then helped the Seattle SuperSonics win their only NBA title in 1979, has died at age 62. According to the Seattle Times, Shelton died Sunday night in Westminster, California. The Times said that according to his son Marlon, Shelton had been battling health issues since suffering a heart attack on May 5. Shelton reportedly had been in a coma for the past month or so. Shelton played 10 seasons in the NBA, including two with the New York Knicks, five with Seattle and the final three with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

NBA age restrictions appear on the way out — The NBA and its players’ union do not always agree. But after both organizations held their annual meetings here this week in conjunction with the NBA Summer League, it is clear they see eye to eye on one thing: The NBA isn’t going to have an age limit for incoming players much longer. “My personal view is that we’re ready to make that change,” NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Tuesday at the end of his news conference following the league’s board of governors meetings this week, adding that the change won’t be immediate. Discussions have been ongoing between the league and the National Basketball Players Association for months about changing the age limit from where it stands— 19 years old and a year removed from high school for domestic players; 19 years old for international players — to 18, which would return the league to the days of players jumping straight from high school to the NBA. It is widely expected that the changed age limit will not go into effect until the 2021 NBA draft.

Police: Woman assaulted at home of LeSean McCoy — Police acknowledged Tuesday that a woman was assaulted during a home invasion at a suburban Atlanta house owned by NFL star LeSean McCoy, hours after graphic posts on social media accused the Buffalo Bills running back of bloodying his former girlfriend. One female was treated and released from the hospital, while another sustained a minor injury during a targeted invasion early Tuesday, Milton police said in a release. “For the record, the totally baseless and offensive claims made against me today on social media are completely false,” McCoy said in a statement released on two of his social media accounts. “Further more, I have not had any direct contact with any of the people involved in months.” McCoy was responding to an Instagram post from a person who said she is friends with the injured woman. The post showed a graphic photo of the former girlfriend and accused McCoy of physically abusing her, his son and his dog, as well as injecting steroids.
