Mykal Rose returns to Bend

Marley is still the go-to name when it comes to mainstream reggae recognition, but Black Uhuru gave it a run for its money in the ’80s. Most notably, the Jamaican group won the first-ever Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album in 1985 with “Anthem,” and it also brought greater attention to its lead singer Mykal Rose (then known as Michael Rose). Though he quit the group soon after “Anthem,” Rose continued to break ground as a solo artist, re-emerging in the late ’80s and early ’90s with a string of singles produced by famed rhythm section Sly and Robbie (also frequent Black Uhuru collaborators). He briefly reunited with Black Uhuru in 2004, but otherwise has focused on his own career, keeping up a steady stream of albums in the last decade (including last year’s hard-driving “Strategy of Rome”). Rose will return to Bend for a show at the Domino Room on Thursday.

Mykal Rose: 9 p.m. Thursday; $20 plus fees; Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave., Bend; djcolonelsimmerdown.com, bendticket.com or 541-408-4329.
