The trip of some 400 miles from Victoria, British Columbia, back to Bend might have drained the tank of more than just the Elks’ team bus.

The Elks, who had won their previous four home games — and won 8-6 Thursday night at Victoria — were smoked Friday night by Yakima Valley, falling 15-1 in the opener of a three-game West Coast League series at Vince Genna Stadium.

Bend starting pitcher Mikey Hooper entered the game with a stretch of 13 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run. But that streak came to a crashing end as the right-hander was roughed up for seven runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. The Pippins led 2-0 before scoring seven runs in the fourth to break the game open.

Yakima Valley cracked four home runs, three of them off Hooper.

The Elks avoided a shutout when Tristen Alvarez hit a run-scoring double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Alex Pallios had two of Bend’s eight hits.

Eight different batters had at least one hit and one RBI for the Pippins, who improved to 4-0 against the Elks this season and 5-2 for the second half of the WCL schedule. Bend dropped to 4-6.
