Pedestrian hurt in hit-and-run

A man was seriously injured by a hit-and-run driver Friday night while trying to cross 27th Street in east Bend.

Kelly Sondgeroth, a 53-year-old transient, was struck shortly before 10 p.m. while trying to cross 27th Street south of the crosswalk at U.S. Highway 20, according to a Bend Police Department press release. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to St. Charles Bend.

Though the driver who hit Sondgeroth fled, debris from a vehicle, a Volkswagen, remained at the scene. Police also were guided by witnesses. At about 11 p.m., police located 18-year-old Bend resident Edwin Dominguez in the downtown Bend parking garage and arrested him on charges that include assault, driving under the influence, felony hit-and-run and minor in possession.

Dominguez was taken to the Deschutes County Jail.

Police engaged in 2 car chases

Deschutes County deputies engaged in simultaneous pursuits in Sisters and Bend Friday evening. One began with a man urinating in public, and the other concluded with a man locking the car doors and removing his clothes.

At about 7:15 p.m. 37-year-old Bend resident John Logston was stopped on Highway 126 near Eagle Crest for urinating in public. After giving deputies a fake name, he climbed into his 2002 BMW and fled toward Sisters. Deputies pursued him at speeds approaching 100 miles per hour before discontinuing the chase for safety reasons.

While deputies were searching for Logston’s car in the Dry Canyon area of Highway 126, a second pursuit began in Bend.

At about 7:50 p.m., deputies tried to stop a 1998 Vokswagen Jetta occupied by two men for a seatbelt violation. The driver, 24-year-old Redmond resident Jake Taylor Lynn Daniels, fled east on Knott Road before turning north on 15th street. After about a quarter mile, however, the tire on the driver’s side of the car came off.

Undeterred, according to a sheriff’s office press release, Daniels continued to flee while driving on the brake assembly. The car finally stopped working near the Bridges at Shadow Glen housing development. The passenger, 18-year-old Bailey Agenbroad of Bend, got out of the car and was detained, according to the sheriff’s office. But Daniels locked the doors and began to remove his clothes.

After breaking several windows, deputies removed Daniels from the car. He was taken to St. Charles Bend for injuries related to broken glass. A deputy was treated for similar injuries. Daniels was arrested on charges that include resisting arrest and reckless driving. He also had a warrant for his arrest for a probation violation. His passenger, Agenbroad, was not charged.

Deputies believe alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the incident.

To the north, meanwhile, Black Butte police located Logston and his BMW northeast of Sisters, triggering a second pursuit. Logston fled south on Camp Polk Road toward Highway 126 at speeds in excess of 80 miles per hour, according to the sheriff’s office. Shortly before turning eastbound on the highway, though, the car ran over a spike strip set out near Aspen Lakes Golf Course. Without the benefit of working tires, the car came to a stop near Cloverdale Road, and Logston was arrested on charges ranging from reckless driving to possession of methamphetamine. Deputies suspect drugs and/or alcohol played a role in his behavior.

Deputies believe the car and/or the plates may be stolen, as the two do not match. Logston also had four outstanding warrants for his arrest, according to the sheriff’s office.
