BOXING

Pacquiao wins 60th career fight — Manny Pacquiao clinched his 60th victory with a seventh-round knockout Sunday of Argentinian Lucas Matthysse, his first stoppage in nine years. Pacquiao said he worked hard but was surprised by the swift win in the World Boxing Association welterweight title fight. Pacquiao rebounded from his disappointing loss last year to Australian Jeff Horn and his victory could extend his boxing career that had taken a backseat to his political life as a Filipino senator. “This is part of boxing. You win some, you lose some,” Matthysse said. He hailed Pacquiao as a “great legend” and said he will take a break after his loss. Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad also attended the fight, the biggest boxing match in the country since the 1975 heavyweight clash between Muhammad Ali and Australian Joe Bugner. Duterte said: “I would like to congratulate Senator Manny Pacquiao for giving us pride and bringing the Filipino nation together once more.”

TABLE TENNIS

North Korean players arrive in South Korea — North Korean table tennis players have arrived in South Korea for an international tournament amid an atmosphere of detente between the rivals. The North’s 16 athletes arrived Sunday. They will participate in the World Tour Platinum Korea Open that begins in the central city of Daejeon on Tuesday and continues through July 22. South Korean officials say players from the two Koreas may compete in combined teams in some events as a goodwill gesture. The Koreas have also agreed to field combined teams in some sports during the August Asian Games in Indonesia. Sports diplomacy has played a large part in facilitating dialogue between the rivals in recent months following a period of animosity over the North’s development of nuclear weapons and missiles.

SOCCER

Rooney makes MLS debut — Even though Wayne Rooney wasn’t in from the start, the English national team’s all-time leading scorer was instrumental in finishing things off in D.C. United’s first true home game of the season. Rooney made his Major League Soccer debut Saturday as a second-half substitute and assisted on the third goal in D.C. United’s 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps in the first game played at Audi Field. Rooney, who entered the game in the 58th minute with D.C. United leading 1-0, provided the assist on Paul Arriola’s second goal of the game in the 80th minute with a simple square pass 30 yards from the goal. Earlier Rooney was involved in the buildup to United’s second goal in the 69th minute, also from Arriola. The 32-year-old Rooney, who is also Manchester United’s all-time leading scorer, last played a competitive game on April 28 for his boyhood team Everton in the Premier League. Rooney felt good after playing just a bit more than 30 minutes and hopes to increase his time on the field as he regains his form. After having two shots blocked in his first five minutes in the game, Rooney’s best chance to register a goal in his first MLS appearance came in the 79th minute but his near post header from eight yards out was saved by Whitecaps goalie Brian Rowe. Rooney again had a dangerous attempt in the 88th minute but his volley attempt went sailing over the crossbar.

RODEO

Colorado bull rider suffers fatal injuries — A memorial service was scheduled for Sunday for a Colorado bull rider who suffered fatal injuries while competing in a Wyoming rodeo. The father of Jason Blasdel of Fruita, Colorado, says his son was injured July 7 while competing at the Platte River Rodeo in Saratoga, Wyoming. Paul Zamora, the coroner in Carbon County, Wyoming, said that Blasdel suffered internal bleeding and died at the hospital on July 8. He was 30. Joe Blasdel tells the Grant Junction Sentinel that his son loved the sport he had competed in since he was 8, but was planning on stepping away from it this year. Jason Blasdel is survived by his wife Heather and two daughters, ages 6 and 2. The memorial service is set for 5 p.m. at Victory Life Church in Fruita, Colorado.
