Adaptive Sports

Jackson Browne tickets benefit OAS — Musician Jackson Browne has donated 100 tickets to his July 24 show at Les Schwab Amphitheater to Oregon Adaptive Sports to be sold as a fundraiser for the organization. Tickets to the show can be purchased for $45 at https://support.oregonadaptivesports.org/event/jackson-browne-les-schwab-ampitheater/e191883, and all proceeds will go to OAS. The show starts at 6:30 p.m.

Little League

Bend North wins 9-11 state tournament — Bend North Little League won the Oregon State 9-11 baseball tournament with consecutive victories over Murrayhill, winning 9-5 on Thursday and then 5-2 on Friday. Bend North lost to Murrayhill in the first game of the tournament, which started July 7 in Gold Hill, and then stormed through the loser’s bracket into the finals. The Bend North senior team (ages 13-16) will compete in the Senior League Baseball West Regional, which starts Thursday in Sacramento, California, and continues through July 25. The Redmond Major softball team, which represented District 5 at the state tournament in Baker City, went 2-3 in pool play, and then was eliminated by a 21-1 loss to Beaumont in the semifinal on Wednesday.

Soccer

BPRD in need of volunteer coaches — Adult volunteers are needed to coach teams in the fall Bend Unified Recreational Soccer League, which will run from Aug. 20 through Oct. 27. Nearly 2,000 boys and girls in first through eighth grade will play on 150 teams in the league, which is a joint program of the Bend Park & Recreation District and Bend FC Timbers. Practices will be held twice a week and games will be played on Saturdays. Prospective coaches must complete a volunteer application, background check and online concussion awareness training. A coaches meeting will be held at the district office at 6 p.m. on Aug. 8. More information and applicable forms are available at www.bendparksandrec.org. RAPRD registration closes Tuesday — Registration for the Redmond Area Park and Recreation District youth soccer leagues closes Tuesday. The Fall Tykes Soccer League is open to kids entering pre-K and kindergarten. The Fall Recreational League is for kids in first through fourth grades, and the Fall Soccer Semi-Competitive League is for fifth- and sixth-graders. Practices start on Sept. 8, and the league runs through Oct. 27. Visit www.raprd.org for more information.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Local Special Olympians medal at USA Games — Two Central Oregon athletes representing Team Oregon were among the medalists at the Special Olympics 2018 USA Games, held July 1-6 in Seattle. Redmond’s Zachary Herrmann, who competes with High Desert Special Olympics, won a silver medal in golf. And Culver’s Micah Webb, of Jefferson County Special Olympics, claimed a silver in singles bowling. More than 4,000 athletes and coaches representing 50 state programs and the District of Columbia competed in 14 Olympic-type team and individual sports at the quadrennial national event.

Tennis

Local team wins section championship — A team of Bend women won the 8.0 women’s division at the Adult 55 & Over United States Tennis Association League Section Championships at Sunriver on July 1. Gayle Schofield, Peggy Falcaro, Carolyn Peters, Maureen Everett, Kim Queen, Karla Farber, Lisa Majure, Karen Berky, Ginger Alden and Darla Farstvedt have played for the team during the course of this season. By winning the sectional championship, the team qualified for the USTA League National Championships, which will be held Oct. 19-21 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.

Track and Field

Sisters’ Anderson wins 400 at J.O. Regionals — Brody Anderson, a 15-year-old Sisters High School student, won the boys 15-16 400-meter dash July 7 at the USA Track & Field Junior Olympic Region 13 Championships at Summit High School in Bend. Anderson, who did not compete as a member of a track club, posted a time of 51.34 seconds in the final. Andrew McDade of the Portland-area team Step ur Game Up was second in 51.89. Anderson qualified for the USATF Hershey National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, which will be held July 23-29 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

COTC hosting final all-comers meet of summer — The Central Oregon Track Club will host an all-comers meet at Summit High School on Wednesday evening. The event is open to all ages, and entry costs $5 per athlete. Track events will begin at 6:30 p.m. and include hurdles (distance adjusted by age group), 800-meter run and racewalk, 100-meter and 400-meter dash, 1-mile run, and a medley relay that will allow friends and family members in different age groups to compete on the same team. Field events begin at 6 p.m. and include javelin, shot put, discus, high jump and long jump. The pole vault competition is open to experienced vaulters ages 13 and up. Online entry is available at www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/meet/350273/register, and day-of registration will be available on site from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

Water Polo

Bend Waves to compete at J.O. nationals — The Bend Waves are sending two teams to the USA Water Polo National Junior Olympics this summer in San Jose, California. The 18U boys team, coached by Ryan Duffy, will compete in the first session, which runs from this Saturday through July 24. The Waves 18U girls team, coached by Sean Starnes, will compete in the second session July 26-29.
