Police on Monday arrested a Bend man suspected of barricading the doors of the Bend police station, breaking a security keypad and leading police on a low-speed chase about 30 miles east of Bend, until he was stopped by a spike strip.

Samuel Wyatt Dennis, 21, was arrested on suspicion of criminal mischief, reckless driving, attempting to elude police and disorderly conduct.

According to a release from the Bend Police Department, an officer leaving the police station on NE 15th Street at the end of a shift at 2:15 a.m. Monday heard a “commotion” near the gate of the secured parking lot. The officer saw a man striking the security keypad at the gate, breaking it. After the officer tried to make contact with the man, the man drove off in a 1998 Dodge pickup, according to police.

After inspecting the police station and security footage, officers found the same suspect had allegedly thrown an unnamed object over the fence, damaging a police vehicle in the secured lot. The suspect had also put a board through the handles of the front doors inside the police station, leaned a heavy metal item against the door, and etched letters including the word “Trump” on the concrete and glass in front of the entrance, according to the release.

Police identified the suspect as Dennis, saying he had made several calls to the Bend Fire Department in which he mentioned “burning the community to the ground,” according to police.

Police found Dennis at his home in northeast Bend. At 10:18 a.m., they attempted to arrest him, but he refused to leave his vehicle, driving through landscaping instead and fleeing in the truck, according to police.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Oregon State Police and Bureau of Land Management personnel assisted with the pursuit east of Bend, where Dennis’ truck was disabled with a spike strip. It stopped on George Millican Road in Crook County at 10:46 a.m., and crisis negotiators, the Central Oregon Emergency Response Team and the state police SWAT team responded.

At 12:17 p.m., police arrested Dennis using chemical agents, as he was refusing to leave his vehicle, according to the release. He was taken to St. Charles Bend with minor injuries from being taken into custody, police said.

Dennis was sentenced to 30 days in jail in February after he pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine and resisting arrest. He is also scheduled to enter a plea Aug. 10 for charges from July 2 of theft and driving with a suspended license. He has prior convictions including menacing, resisting arrest, attempt to elude an officer and unlawful use of a weapon.
