A 1,000-acre wildfire is burning along the northeast border of the Maury Mountains in the Ochoco National Forest and on private land about 30 miles southeast of Prineville, officials said Tuesday.

The Cemetery Fire is one of more than 24 wildfires started by lightning Sunday and Monday across Central Oregon. All the other fires have been contained to less than an acre.

The Ochoco National Forest estimates more than 1,300 lightning strikes occurred during thunderstorms between Sunday and Monday, causing the fires.

On Tuesday, more than 110 firefighters worked to control the Cemetery Fire. There is no estimate for how much the fire has been contained.

The firefighting effort Tuesday also included nine air tankers, four helicopters, nine fire engines, four hand crews and the crews from the Post-Paulina Rangeland Fire Protection Association.

Firefighters were challenged Tuesday by gusty winds and hot temperatures nearing 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning Tuesday for Central Oregon until 8 p.m. Wednesday. Temperatures on Tuesday were above 90 degrees in the region and 97 degrees in Prineville, according to the weather service.

The Cemetery Fire was first reported at about 1 p.m. Monday, and quickly grew from strong afternoon winds, according to fire officials.

The fire has burned both dry shrub and grasslands and climbed into higher elevation timbered areas.
