North defeats South in WCL all-star game — Former Ridgeview standout and current Bend Elk Collin Runge hit a game-tying, three-run homer in the top of the second inning for the South, but the North pulled away with a steady offensive attack to beat the South 10-6 on Tuesday night to win the West Coast League all-star game in Port Angeles, Washington. The North scored at least one run in all but two innings in which they batted. Bend’s Tristen Alvarez walked and scored a run for the South. Kyle Schimpf from the University of Southeastern Louisiana led the offensive attack for the North, as he torched the South with 3 hits, an RBI and a run scored. Also for the North, Notre Dame’s Matt James — a catcher for the WCL’s Bellingham Bells — had a pair of RBIs and scored three runs.

Rams agree to extension with Brandin Cooks — The Los Angeles Rams have agreed to a five-year extension with wide receiver Brandin Cooks. The Rams traded their first- and sixth-round picks in the 2018 NFL draft to the New England Patriots for the former Oregon State standout and a fourth-round pick earlier this year. Before joining the Rams, Cooks played in 58 regular-season games with 46 starts, and had at least 1,000 yards receiving in each of the past three seasons. The fifth-year pro has 280 receptions for 3,943 yards and 27 touchdowns, and averages 14.1 yards per reception. He had nine 100-plus yard receiving games in 2016 with the New Orleans Saints.

Liz Cambage breaks WNBA scoring record — Displaying ruthless efficiency, Liz Cambage of the Dallas Wings broke Riquna Williams’ WNBA single-game scoring record Tuesday by pouring in 53 points in a win over the New York Liberty in Arlington, Texas. Cambage, a 26-year-old Australian center who stands 6 feet 8 inches, simply could not be stopped. She made 17 of 22 shots from the field — including 4 of 5 from 3-point range — and 15 of 16 free throws. For good measure she added 10 rebounds and five blocks, and the record-breaking points came on a 3-pointer late in the Wings’ 104-87 victory. “It’s pretty big,” Cambage told reporters after the game. “I’ve had big numbers in China, I’ve had big numbers in Australia, and I’ve heard a lot of people say I could never have big numbers here in the WNBA. So I guess this game is for y’all.”

Steve Kerr receives contract extension — Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr has received a contract extension following the franchise’s repeat championship and third title in four years during his tenure. Kerr and general manager Bob Myers, who are close friends and colleagues, said when the season ended that something would get done quickly once they began formal discussions. Kerr had one year remaining on his original $25 million, five-year contract. Details of the extension were not announced Tuesday. The 52-year-old Kerr has said he hopes to coach at least another decade and perhaps 15 years. His Warriors swept LeBron James and Cleveland in the fourth straight NBA Finals matchups between the rivals. Kerr stayed healthy and on the bench while continuing to deal with symptoms such as headaches and dizzy spells stemming from a pair of back surgeries following the 2015 title.

Lakers’ Ball to be ready by camp — Los Angeles Lakers guard Lonzo Ball has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The team said the procedure on Tuesday was successful and Ball is expected to be fully recovered by the start of training camp in September. Ball averaged 10.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 52 games as a rookie last season.

Governor dedicates park named for Jesse Owens — Ohio’s governor on Tuesday dedicated a new state park and wildlife area named for Olympic great Jesse Owens. Gov. John Kasich, accompanied by two of Owens’ daughters, said that achievements of “heroes” such as Owens should be preserved to inspire others to “overcome challenges and accomplish their very best.” Owens was a world record-setting sprinter at Ohio State University and won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. He died in 1980 at age 66. The governor personally chose to name the park after Owens, The Columbus Dispatch reported. Jesse Owens State Park and Wildlife Area in eastern Ohio was created after Ohio’s Department of Natural Resources struck a deal with American Electric Power to buy a large portion of a 60,000-acre (24,281-hectare) parcel. The state hopes to buy more land from AEP to create the largest park in the state.
