Ze Rox goes solo on ‘Termini,’ teams with Theclectik, Jay Tablet

This week, check out two recent releases with ties to the ZonkedOut hip-hop squad:

For the last five years or so, Zoe Falkenstein, AKA Ze Rox, has been best known as the voice and face of Bend’s ever-popular soul-funk-rock-jam sextet Elektrapod. That group is on hiatus (despite its recent set at Bend Summer Festival) while Rox pursues a nine-month program at the Conservatory of Recording Arts and Sciences in Tempe, Arizona, but its members have all kept busy with other projects.

That includes Rox, who dropped her first solo album, “Termini,” just a few months after skipping town. Rox wrote, produced and performed everything on this compact, nine-song set (with only a couple of exceptions), resulting in a singular artistic statement that allows the powerhouse vocalist to show off her full range on everything from electronic club bangers to soul-inflected jazz.

Opening track “Cold Company” sets the mood, featuring confident hooks and a synth-laden beat that straddles the line between modern and old-school electronic pop. Much of the primarily electronic instrumentation follows this balancing act — the slinky, sexy grooves of “Leather” sound like cabaret jazz performed for the Soundcloud set, while the title track is a frothy summer pop anthem featuring deft rapping from Rox and Bend MC Tyler Martian.

While much of the music is upbeat, Rox tackles some weighty subject matter in her lyrics. The best two songs here go hand in hand. “Me Too,” which will be released as a video Aug. 3, takes on sexual assault in the #MeToo era with an angry, defiant message of empowerment (Rox opens the song by snarling, “I’m not a f—ing victim”) married to one of the most infectious hooks on the album. Meanwhile, the track “All the Time,” which finds Rox singing from the perspective of the assaulter over a dark, jazzy bass groove, ultimately serves as a cautionary tale (a point driven home by the song’s equally dark music video).

Before leaving for Arizona, Rox teamed up with local DJ, producer and music promoter Reggie Martinez, AKA Theclectik, and rapper Jay Tablet for this summer rager, recorded by Rory Restani at Oxiliary Studios in Bend (Restani also recorded and engineered “Termini”). No heavy themes here — this is a straight-up love song set to an infectious beat. The track, which is making rounds on local radio, is a prelude to Theclectik’s new EP “Analog Heart in a Digital World,” due out later this month (though the song won’t appear on the record).
