Lake Billy Chinook health advisory lifted

The Oregon Health Authority lifted the health advisory related to harmful toxins on Lake Billy Chinook on Thursday.

Water monitoring has confirmed that the level of cyanotoxins in the Jefferson County lake are below state guidelines, according to a news release from the agency. However, state officials advise visitors to be alert for algae blooms in Lake Billy Chinook and other Oregon lakes and reservoirs.

The health advisory for cyanotoxins was initially issued for a portion of Lake Billy Chinook June 22, and was expanded to include the entire lake on July 11. Advisories for the toxins have been issued during each of the past three summers.

The toxins can cause numbness, tingling or dizziness that can lead to heart problems or difficulty breathing. Children and pets are at increased risk for exposure, according to the health authority. While the toxins are often recognizable from a scummy, paint-like appearance over a portion of the water, the agency cautions that cyanotoxins can still exist in clear water.
