Usyk beats Gassiev to unify cruiserweight division — Ukrainian boxer Oleksandr Usyk unified the cruiserweight division by beating Russian Murat Gassiev by unanimous decision on Saturday. Despite facing a hostile crowd in Moscow, Usyk controlled the fight with his jab to add Gassiev’s IBF and WBA titles to his own WBC and WBO belts. Gassiev landed some heavy body shots when he got inside Usyk’s reach, but started to tire and the Ukrainian was utterly dominant in the later rounds as Gassiev swung wild haymakers. Usyk, a former Olympic gold medalist, holds all four major titles after just 15 professional fights, all of which he won. Gassiev drops to 26-1. It is unclear if Usyk plans to defend his cruiserweight titles because he has said he is considering a move up to heavyweight.
MOTOR SPORTS
Bell tops New Hampshire field — Christopher Bell held off hard-charging Cup champion Brad Keselowski over the final 18 laps at New Hampshire Motor Speedway to win his second straight Xfinity Series race. Keselowski had won the pole Saturday but was dropped to the rear of the field because he was late to the mandatory drivers meeting. It proved to be nothing more than a mild inconvenience for Keselowski in the No. 22 Ford. He stormed past the second-tier regulars and had his fourth straight Xfinity win in sight. Bell topped Cup star Kyle Busch to win last week’s race at Kentucky Speedway and he followed up in the No. 20 Toyota by keeping Keselowski behind him down the stretch for his third win this season. The 23-year-old Bell, who drives for Joe Gibbs Racing, had the fresh tires that Keselowski needed and that was enough to find victory lane. Bell gave his checkered flag to a young fan in the stands.
RUGBY
England beat hosts USA to advance to semis — English captain Tom Mitchell found some space on the pitch about 30 meters away from the try line. He glanced to his left and saw a big patch of open field so he lofted a high kick toward the sideline. Flanker Phil Burgess caught the ball at full pace and outran a diving defender before touching down to secure a 24-19 sudden-death win in extra-time against host United States in the Rugby World Cup Sevens quarterfinals on Saturday in San Francisco.
