March 7, 1951 – July 7, 2018
After a valiant fight with pancreatic cancer, Paul Douglas Smith passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on July 7, 2018.
He was born in Trumansburg, NY on March 7, 1951, and most recently made his home in San Diego, CA.
Upon completing a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Lawrence University in upstate New York, Paul continued his education by receiving a Master’s Degree in International Marketing from Thunderbird College in Phoenix, AZ. His career spanned many years in the food industry, both in retail and food service, working with several large companies including Carnation, Colgate, and Rich Products for over 17 years, where he was Vice President of the Food Service Division. Most recently, after having worked with Burry Foods out of Chicago, he decided to venture out on his own, working closely with Starbucks sourcing new food ideas for their stores.
The Smith family were the consummate hosts. They were active in many community activities in their home town of Bend.
Paul loved skiing, golf, mountain biking, coaching his daughter’s sports, being active in their lives and entertaining family and friends. The much anticipated “Bend Open” was a fan favorite for friends, family, and donors for the past 15 years. He and his family travelled extensively around the world and had many international friendships. Above all else, Paul was a loving and doting father, devoted husband, loyal and compassionate friend.
He is survived by his wife, Robin of 36 years; and two beautiful daughters, Kendall Rene and Kaily Carleen both of San Diego. Paul is also survived by four siblings and their families, Eric and his wife, Maria Smith (Pittsburg, PA); Dana and his wife, Roxanne Smith, (Trumansburg, NY); Michael and his wife, LaJuana Mitchell Smith, (Los Angeles CA); Elizabeth Smith and her husband, Michael Lambert; (Eugene, OR); and many nieces, nephews and good friends. Beyond his close family, Paul is survived by a group of his most intimate and dearest friends, Greg and Georgia Johnson, Gary and Patty Mayeda, and Rudolph ‘Butch’ Goette, who all loved him dearly, and will miss him immensely.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, July 21, at 11:00 am, at the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church in Solana Beach, CA. All are welcome to attend.
