America returns to Deschutes County Fair

Hop on that horse with no name (or if you can find it, the last unicorn) and gallop to the opening day of the Deschutes County Fair & Rodeo on Wednesday. The first of the fair’s annual four free concerts features a rare returning act, America, which also performed there in 2015. Celebrating 48 years this year, the British folk-rock pioneer (yes, despite the name) peaked in the 1970s with a series of George Martin-produced albums and singles such as “Tin Man,” “Sister Golden Hair” and that one named after the nameless horse. But the group has continued to steadily tour and release new music, most recently 2015’s odds-and-ends collection “Lost & Found,” under the guidance of songwriters and co-founding members Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell (fellow co-founder Dan Peek left the band in 1977 and died in 2011). The fair continues Aug. 2 through 5; check out next week’s issue for more.

America: 7 p.m. Wednesday, doors open at 5:30 p.m.; free with concert pass (available at any area McDonald’s from 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday) and fair admission (adults $22 for full fair, $12 for daily pass; $13/$7 for kids ages 6 to 12 and senior citizens ages 62 and older; free for kids younger than 5); Deschutes County Fair, 3800 SW Airport Way, Redmond; expo.deschutes.org or 541-548-2711.
