Since his 1970 self-titled debut album, Canadian songwriter Bruce Cockburn has been nothing if not prolific, dropping new material every few years and racking up 13 Juno awards in the process. He may not be a household name in the U.S., but his thoughtful, jazz- and blues-inflected ruminations on life, politics and art have earned him a well-deserved cult following (not to mention scoring hits for artists such as Barenaked Ladies and Jimmy Buffett). Recent years have seen the songwriter slow down just long enough to write a memoir (2014’s “Rumours of Glory”), but he returned strong last year with his 33rd album, “Bone on Bone,” drawing inspiration from Canadian poet Al Purdy, Trump-induced anxiety in the U.S. and his long-running obsessions with Christianity, mysticism and environmentalism (on the haunting standout “False River,” in particular). In other words, it’s classic Cockburn. The songwriter will perform an intimate set at the Tower Theatre on Thursday.
Bruce Cockburn: 8 p.m. Thursday; $75, $52 or $41 plus theater preservation fee; Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St., Bend; towertheatre.org or 541-317-0700.
