For most of Wednesday evening, thanks to a stout pitching performance by starter Sam Muskat, the Bend Elks did not resemble a team that had lost 10 straight games.

Alas, that streak reached 11 when the Portland Pickles defeated the struggling Elks 4-0 in a West Coast League contest at Vince Genna Stadium.

One night after the South Division-leading Pickles collected 20 hits in a 14-1 blowout of the Elks in the opener of a three-game series, Muskat worked eight innings against virtually the same Portland lineup and had Bend in the game, down 2-0, when he was relieved by Ryan Mets to open the ninth.

Muskat, a left-hander from Beaverton who played for the Pickles last summer in the Great West League, allowed eight hits against his former team. He struck out two and walked four, and the runs he surrendered both scored on wild pitches in the third inning.

The Elks played errorless defense, and they had a total of eight hits to Portland’s nine. John Arndorfer and Collin Runge had two hits apiece for Bend. Sam Novitske hit a two-run double for the Pickles in the ninth inning.
