A climber hit by a falling rock was rescued Wednesday afternoon at Smith Rock State Park, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
The climber, identified as Shawn Snyder, 48, of Bishop, California, was struck at about 1 p.m. while he was on Monkey Face by a rock said to be the size of a plate and 2 to 3 inches thick, the sheriff’s office said.
Search and rescue volunteers and the Redmond Fire Department brought Snyder down the hillside south of Monkey Face and then along the Mesa Verda trail. Snyder was then ferried across the Crooked River in a raft and taken by ambulance to St. Charles Redmond. His injuries were not life-threatening, the sheriff’s office said.
Snyder and a friend were trying to create a new climbing route when one of their ropes dislodged the rock that fell on Snyder, the sheriff’s office said.
