A small brush fire that burned less than one acre along U.S. Highway 97 in Bend damaged a nearby home Wednesday afternoon, according to the Bend Fire Department.
The fire started shortly after 3 p.m. near the 61000 block of Geary Drive and burned a large ponderosa pine tree, causing a large plume of smoke in the area. The fire spread to a nearby home, where flames broke a window and damaged a fence and play structure, Battalion Chief Dave Howe said.
The fire damaged about $5,000 worth of property, according to Bend Fire.
Fire crews from Bend Fire, Deschutes National Forest and Oregon Department of Forestry were able to contain the one-third acre fire within an hour, Howe said.
The northbound off ramp at exit 141 on Highway 97 was temporarily closed due to the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
