A 13-year-old kayaker was rescued Wednesday afternoon after getting stuck in a section of Deschutes River rapids south of Bend.
Shortly before 6 p.m., personnel from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and Bend Fire Department rushed to Lava Island Falls in response to a report that a kayaker had become stranded on a rocky island in the middle of the river. Rescue personnel found the unidentified boy, a Bend resident, on an island between Lava Island and the east bank of the river. Lava Island Falls is considered Class V whitewater, according to a sheriff’s office press release.
With the assistance of rescue swimmers and a raft tethered to the shore, the boy was taken to the east bank of the river. He was uninjured.
