Deschutes County Fair underway in Redmond

Published 12:00 am Thursday, August 2, 2018

Delighting county residents for 99 years, the Deschutes County Fair is a veritable smorgasbord of family activities, animals, live music and, of course, food.

The fair kicked off Wednesday night with classic rock band America lighting up the First Interstate Bank Center. The music hits continue with Big and Rich featuring Cowboy Troy (Thursday), Grand Funk Railroad (Friday) and Gary Allen (Saturday). If you don’t get your fill of dancing at these free concerts, Friday and Saturday also will feature an after-hours dance at the rodeo grounds lasting till midnight for those 21 and older.

For the younger crowds, The Bulletin’s Family Fun Zone is the place to be. With hip-hop pony races, fire hose water-ball battles, sack races and many more activities to keep you cool and help burn off the sugar rush from that funnel cake.

And what is a fair without food? With all the favorites like kettle corn, ice cream and elephant ears coupled with local specialties like New York Sub Shop and even a cocktail bar, everyone will have their fair share of snacks, and drinks, throughout the weekend.

While you inhale that deep-fried Twinkie you’ve always wondered about, check out the many local bands and acts performing on the Food Court Stage. This year’s lineup includes country music, comedy shows, ventriloquists, even a talent showcase where the winner will walk away with $150.

So hop in the car, saddle up your horse, grab your bike or catch the shuttle from Bend, Sisters or Redmond high school’s and don’t miss this year’s County Fair.
