‘Big Red Machine’ wins mayor’s race in Tennessee — Glenn Jacobs, the WWE wrestler known as Kane and the Big Red Machine, has won the bout for mayor in Tennessee’s third largest county. Jacobs, a Republican who also runs an insurance and real estate company, was leading Democrat Linda Haney by a large margin with most of the votes counted in Knox County on Thursday. The Knoxville News Sentinel reports Jacobs claimed victory at his watch party, saying his decision to seek the mayor’s job was met at first with “pretty resounding laughter” from some politicians. Jacobs won a close primary in May. Results of the primary were delayed when the county’s election reporting website crashed after a concerted cyberattack that experts deemed “malicious.” Haney ran small businesses with her husband before she retired. She was considered an underdog in the solidly Republican county.

Ravens edge Bears in Hall of Fame game — The Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears honored their great linebackers Ray Lewis and Brian Urlacher with some defense to make them proud in the Hall of Fame game that opened the NFL’s preseason Thursday night. There was a little spark of offense, some provided by Baltimore’s first-round draft pick Lamar Jackson in the second half of a 17-16 victory. His 7-yard touchdown pass to fellow first-rounder Hayden Hurst came after the Ravens’ defense recovered a fumble. Chicago put together its best drive in the final minutes and journeyman Tyler Bray connected with Tanner Gentry for a 10-yard score to cap a 92-yard march. But the 2-point conversion pass fell incomplete. Otherwise, D was the letter of the day: there were six turnovers in all, and 12 sacks, eight by the Bears.

SOCCER

U.S. to play Colombia in exhibition at Tampa — The U.S. will play Colombia in an exhibition at Tampa, Florida, on Oct. 11, one of six friendlies planned for this fall. Interim coach Dave Sarachan has led the Americans to two wins, one loss and three draws since taking over last fall from Bruce Arena, who quit after the loss at Trinidad and Tobago that costs the U.S. a berth in this year’s World Cup. Searching for a successor was delayed by the hiring of former American midfielder Earnie Stewart as the general manager of the team. Stewart did not start his new job until Tuesday. The U.S. does not have a competitive match until the CONCACAF Gold Cup next June. The Americans have exhibitions against Brazil on Sept. 7 at East Rutherford, New Jersey; Mexico on Sept. 11 at Nashville, Tennessee; Colombia on Oct. 11 at Tampa, Florida; England on Nov. 15 at London; and Italy on Nov. 20 at a site to be determined the U.S. Soccer Federation plans another October game.
