5-year-old rescued after kidnapping — Police say a 5-year-old girl was rescued after being kidnapped and taken on a high-speed chase on Marine Drive in Portland. Officers approached a man who had apparently passed out in a Nissan pickup near N. Anchor Way on Saturday afternoon. A passerby tried to get the girl out of the back seat, but the man woke up and took off when police arrived. The truck reached speeds as high as 115 mph as it sped toward Portland International Airport. Police said they stopped the car by spiking its tires. The man jumped into the Columbia River but was captured. He was taken to a hospital after telling officers he took an unnamed substance. The child was uninjured.
Man pleads no contest to sexual abuse — A 46-year-old man convicted of sexually abusing a child in Keizer has been sentenced to more than six years in prison. Lucio Barrera pleaded no contest to first-degree sexual abuse and was sentenced Thursday. Barrera was arrested on sexual abuse and unlawful sexual penetration charges in April for allegedly molesting a girl under age 12. In his plea petition, he admitted to molesting the girl sometime between 2015 and 2017. Barrera will be required to register as a sex offender upon his release from prison.
