Deaths of note from around the world:

Antonio Dias, 74: Brazilian artist whose early, hot-colored paintings needled his country’s military dictatorship and who later turned to subtly political conceptual art while in self-imposed European exile. Died Wednesday of a brain tumor and lung cancer in Rio de Janeiro.

Joël Robuchon, 73: Endlessly inventive French chef who earned a record number of Michelin stars by recasting French haute cuisine in a personal style that emphasized intense flavors and precise technique. He was best known in recent years for the chain of small restaurants he called ateliers. Died Monday of complications from pancreatic cancer in Geneva.
