After originally planning to present a $69.8 million bond measure to voters in May, the Redmond School Board will decide at Wednesday night’s meeting if the measure will go on the ballot in November.

According to Superintendent Mike McIntosh , money from the bond measure would completely replace M.A. Lynch Elementary, which was built in 1965 and suffers from structural problems. The district’s website said Lynch was built “with lower quality construction.” McIntosh noted that during heavy snowfalls, the school’s flat ceiling would sag.

“If we have another big snow, we’re less prepared for that than we should be (at Lynch),” McIntosh said. “We think it’s time to make those adjustments.”

In January, he told The Bulletin that renovating the building would cost $21 million and rebuilding the structure would cost $27 million.

Another proposed project the bond would pay for would be the addition of secure entryways at every elementary school in the district, as well as a $10 million renovation of Obsidian Middle School, built in 1979, to increase safety and security.

McIntosh said that because of increased gun violence in schools, the proposed security upgrades were “urgent and critical.”

If passed, the bond measure would also upgrade security camera systems; eliminate multiple entryways at middle and high schools; upgrade or replace HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems; install LED lighting and energy-efficient windows; update outdated roofs and flooring; and modernize classrooms with technology upgrades.

The district last passed a bond measure in 2008, which totaled $110 million and built Ridgeview High School and Sage Elementary.

McIntosh said he was “optimistic” a second bond measure would be supported by the community and that the school board would unanimously put the measure on November ballots.

“I believe it will end up being 5-0 affirmative,” he said of the board’s vote. “I’m hopeful that’s the way it’s going to go, and I’ll remain that way until they prove me wrong.”

The board meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room ABC at the Redmond School District Office.
