The week ahead

A rundown of games and events to watch for locally and nationally from the world of sports (all times Pacific):

Monday

Major League Baseball, Seattle at Oakland, 7:05 p.m. (Root): Following a four-game road sweep of the AL West-leading Houston Astros, the Mariners find themselves just four games out of first place, and just a game and a half behind the red-hot Athletics. This crucial three-game series could go a long way in shaping the American League playoff picture as both teams are gunning for the automatic berth in the stretch run.

Thursday

NFL preseason football, New York Jets at Washington, 5 p.m. (ESPN): We are still three weeks out from the start of the regular season, so more preseason action will have to provide this week’s football fix. Sam Darnold, the former USC star and the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft, is competing against a couple of veterans for the Jets’ starting quarterback job.

Thursday

Baseball, Little League World Series in Willamsport, Pennsylvania: The first game in the 72nd LLBWS pits the champions of the Caribbean and Asia-Pacific regions at 10 a.m. on ESPN. All 32 games in the 16-team tournament will be televised by ESPN networks or ABC, concluding with the winners of the United States and International brackets facing off for the championship at noon on Aug. 26 on ABC.

Friday-Sunday

Soccer, Bend Premier Cup: In its ninth year, this tournament has grown to include nearly 200 teams and more than 3,000 soccer players, boys and girls ranging from U11 to U19. The Bend FC Timbers host the event, which started last weekend and for the first time includes a second weekend of action at five sites on Bend’s east side. Spectators are welcome. Saturday

Running, Monkey Face Half Marathon in Terrebonne: Named after the famous climbing feature at Smith Rock State Park, where the race is staged, this scenic event starts at 7 a.m. with a half marathon (which can be run as a relay). Following are races of 7 miles, starting at 7:45 a.m., and 4 miles, starting at 8 a.m. For more information, including registration, visit www.pinkbuffaloracing.com/mfhm.html.
