Crash near Burns kills 8 — A collision in Harney County that killed eight people happened when the driver of one SUV crossed the centerline and crashed into another SUV carrying seven people. The Oregon State Police said Tuesday that both cars were Toyota 4 Runners and all the victims died at the scene Monday morning. A 1999 Toyota was occupied only by the driver and veered into the eastbound lane of state Highway 78 southeast of Burns. It struck a 2016 Toyota 4 Runner carrying a driver and six passengers. The names of the victims were being withheld so authorities can contact relatives. No more details have been released and the investigation is continuing.

6 arrested after ICE driveway blocked — Federal officers arrested six people at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in southwest Portland. The arrests came as a group of clergy and others marched to the building Tuesday morning and blocked a driveway. The group sought a meeting with the regional ICE director and the release of more than 100 asylum seekers who are being held at a federal prison in Sheridan. Authorities arrested three people during a similar clergy protest action last week. The arrests come three weeks after a 38-day, round-the-clock protest came to an end outside the facility. Unlike last week, the protesters were not handcuffed in public, but were taken inside the ICE building and arrested.

Injuries at classic car cruise — A spectator who was seriously injured when he was struck by a 1955 Chevy Bel-Air at a classic car cruise in The Dalles is being treated for a fractured skull and broken bones. Ronald Leroy Medorin, 53, of Portland, was driving the Chevy and posted bail on Monday on a charge of second-degree assault. The spectator, Craig Byers, 28, was the most seriously injured of several spectators hurt at the annual Neon Cruise event. Investigators say Medorin rapidly accelerated after a light turned green. Some witnesses say he was trying to race a vehicle in the adjacent lane. Cruise organizers say they will take a closer look at allowing “burnouts,” a practice that involves spinning a car’s wheels to produce smoke.

Legislature hires lawyer amid harassment claims — Oregon lawmakers have voted to hire a Portland law firm to handle the Legislature’s response to a complaint that top Democrats covered up sexual harassment at the Capitol. Lawmakers voted Monday to hire Barran Liebman LLP. Legislative Counsel Dexter Johnson said the firm is not to charge over $100,000 for the work. The complaint filed earlier this month by Democrat and Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian alleges that House Speaker Tina Kotek and Senate President Peter Courtney failed to act quickly or effectively enough to stop then-Sen. Jeff Kruse from harassing female senators and student interns. Kotek and Courtney previously said they reacted appropriately upon learning of allegations against the Roseburg Republican. The Legislature first asked the state Department of Justice to represent it, but the agency declined because it usually represents lawmakers and the Bureau of Labor and Industries overseen by Avakian.
