Bend’s Carey Watson was a hometown winner Wednesday, taking first place in the Oregon Super Senior men’s golf championships at Broken Top Club.
Watson, this year’s Pacific Northwest Men’s Super Senior champion, shot 72-69 for a 3-under-par 141, winning by two strokes over Gladstone’s Denny Taylor. Watson was one shot back of Taylor after Tuesday’s first round, but he started Wednesday’s play with birdies on four of the first seven holes and went on to victory.
Another Bend player, Charley Griswold, finished third at 75-73—148.
The Oregon Women’s Stroke Play was held concurrently at Broken Top, and Salem’s Ellie Slama was the winner. The rising sophomore at Oregon State finished at 3-under 69-72—141, beating runner-up Madalyn Ardueser, of Eugene, by a single stroke.
Other winners were Roseburg’s Anita Wicks, who claimed her fifth Oregon Senior Women’s Stroke Play title, and Medford’s Carolyn Turner in the Women’s Super Senior. Bend’s Nettie Morrison, a four-time Women’s Super Senior champion, tied for second place, four strokes behind Turner at 167 over two days.
