Fatal crash north of Madras claims three lives

Three people were killed early Friday morning after a two-vehicle, head-on crash on U.S. Highway 97 near milepost 80 north of Madras.

Oregon State Police troopers responded at about 2 a.m. and found a black 2000 Mazda Protege traveling northbound had crossed into the southbound lane and struck a guardrail and then collided with a southbound 2006 Kia Sportage.

The driver of the Mazda, Sarah Marie Steffler, 33, Moses Lake, Washington, and a juvenile female passenger, who has not been identified, were killed in the crash.

There were four occupants in the Kia Sportage, including the driver Miguel Galvan Sanchez, 40, of Manson, Washington. Sanchez and one other passenger were transported by ambulance to St. Charles Madras and another passenger was transported by air ambulance to St. Charles Bend. A fourth passenger, a juvenile female, who has not been identified, was killed in the crash.

State police were assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County EMS and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
