COLUMBUS, Ohio — Urban Meyer, the famed football coach at Ohio State, has been suspended for three games after a university investigation found fault with the way he handled the case of an assistant coach who was accused of domestic violence.
The university’s athletic director, Gene Smith, was also suspended. Meyer will miss games against Oregon State, Rutgers and Texas Christian.
“Their handling of this matter did not exhibit the kind of leadership and high standards that we expect of our athletic director, head coach, assistant coaches and all on the football staff,” a university statement said.
The decision came after a two-week investigation and a meeting of the board of trustees behind closed doors that lasted several hours Wednesday.
The board on Monday was briefed on the university’s report, written by former Securities and Exchange Commission chairwoman Mary Jo White and her team from the law firm Debevoise & Plimpton.
Although the report found that Meyer had acted in “good faith” in not reporting the allegations, it was ultimately “not sufficient,” White said at a news conference Wednesday following the board meeting.
