A La Pine man was arrested early Wednesday morning for first-degree arson after he allegedly set his house on fire.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office deputies and La Pine Rural Fire Protection District responded at about 11:05 p.m. Tuesday to the house fire on the 16000 block of Cassidy Drive.

An investigation found there was an explosion and flames coming from the living room windows, according to the sheriff’s office.

The homeowner, Leonard E. Gothberg, 38, later arrived to his house. Through witness statements and evidence, Gothberg was arrested for first-degree arson.

The cause of the fire and Gothberg’s motivation are still under investigation. The sheriff’s office does not believe the cause was related to a hash oil explosion or other drug manufacturing.

Damage to the house is estimated at more than $50,000, according to court records.
