Northern Lake County to host public hearing on leaving COCC district

The Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission will hold a public hearing Monday night in Silver Lake to consider a petition asking north Lake County to be removed from Central Oregon Community College’s district.

Commission members and staff will hear public input regarding the petition, according to a press release from the commission. No final decisions will be made at the hearing, which will take place at 6 p.m. at North Lake School.

The release states that if the commission receives a petition signed by at least 10 percent of registered voters in a territory, it must consider whether or not to remove the area from the college district’s boundary. If the body decides to move forward, the state Legislature must approve the boundary change.

COCC spokesman Ron Paradis said the college’s board of directors will meet Monday at noon to consider taking action on the petition.

If approved, the petition would remove voting precincts 13 and 14 of Lake County, which includes the small towns of Fort Rock and Christmas Valley.
