Review: Theclectik drops genre-bending debut

DJ and producer Theclectik, aka Madhappy and born Reggie Martinez, has been a part of Bend’s music scene for more than a decade. In addition to his DJ performances and production work for numerous West Coast hip-hop artists (often through the local ZonkedOut squad), he is currently the talent booker for The Capitol, and worked in the same capacity for closed venues Bendistillery Martini Bar and his own Madhappy Lounge.

So it’s a bit surprising that last month’s six-song EP, “Analog Heart in a Digital World,” is Theclectik’s debut record. Then again, maybe it isn’t: As Martinez explained, all the work he’s done promoting other artists over the years led him to push his own music to the back burner.

These tracks were recorded at Oxiliary Studios in Bend over a three-year span with Martinez handling all production and instrumentation (with the exception of flute on “Independent”). He’s joined by a bevy of guest vocalists and rappers, friends and past collaborators — so true to his musical past, he’s building platforms for other artists, even on his solo debut.

Despite the piecemeal recording and the disparate styles of each guest, the EP flows well. Staying true to the title, Martinez creates whirling soundscapes that deftly mix acoustic instrumentation with dark, hard-hitting beats. The title track is a prime example, kicking things off with a dry acoustic guitar riff as Los Angeles rappers Myka 9 and Abstract Rude spit claustrophobic verses that lament the subjugation of nature to technology in modern life — a theme that continually pops up on these songs.

The EP front-loads its hardest beats, culminating in “Agendas,” built on an often entertaining, sometimes head-scratching rant from L.A.’s LuckyIam. The floating jazz piano and angelic vocals (from Serena Hunt) of “Eye of the Storm” shift the listener into the EP’s more eclectic back half, which peaks with the uplifting closer “Time as We Think.”
