Allgaier wins Xfinity race — Justin Allgaier sailed to victory Saturday at Road America for his fourth win of the season and second road course victory in three weeks. Allgaier held a 5.4-second advantage over second-place Matt Tifft. The victory erases the sting of a close call in 2011, when Allgaier led late in the race before running out of fuel during a yellow flag. Allgaier benefitted from late-race commotion after starting 11th. With three laps to go, second-place James Davison and third-place Justin Marks were trying desperately to catch Allgaier when their cars spun out. Tifft blew past Davison and Marks. The victory allowed Allgaier to leapfrog Christopher Bell atop the series driver standings. NASCAR Hall of Famer Bill Elliott finished 20th after coming out of retirement to take his first ride Xfinity ride around Road America. British racer Katherine Legge, driving in her second NASCAR race, finished 14th.

49ers fall to Colts, led by Luck — Andrew Luck got the Indianapolis Colts’ offense in sync Saturday, leading them to a go-ahead touchdown before leaving in the second quarter. Five days after a mediocre performance in his first home start in more than 19 months, Luck looked sharp as the Colts hung on for a 23-17 victory over San Francisco. “I really wanted to feel like we created some type of rhythm and we did,” he said. “We made some mistakes. But getting in rhythm was something I really wanted to see.” Luck scrambled for a 15-yard run on third-and-13 then threw a 15-yard TD pass to a leaping Eric Ebron on the next play to give Indy a 7-3 lead midway with 8:47 left in the first half. He finished 8 of 10 with 90 yards and took one sack. Otherwise, it was a tough day for the Colts, who struggled to establish the run and couldn’t stop San Francisco’s physical ground game in the first half.Jimmy Garoppolo, meanwhile, couldn’t get the ball into the end zone. He was 9 of 19 for 135 yards, leading the 49ers to only two field goals before departing in the third quarter. Alfred Morris carried 17 times for 84 yards, doing the bulk of his work in the first half. “We ran the ball very well, but I was just saying this to the team — running the ball well doesn’t (automatically) get you points,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said.
Football player collapses, dies — A Mississippi high school football player who collapsed on the sidelines of a game has died. Sophomore Dennis Mitchell, 16, collapsed on the field Friday night, news outlets reported. In a post on Byhalia High School’s Facebook page Saturday, the school announced Mitchell’s death and asked people keep Mitchell’s family in their prayers. Mitchell was standing on the sidelines in the second quarter when he fell face-first and began shaking. Players called for help and the game stopped. He was placed in the back of the ambulance, which then transported him to Northwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in Clarksdale. Coahoma County Coroner Scotty Meredith said Mitchell was pronounced dead at the hospital at 8:40 p.m. Friday. The body will be sent for an autopsy. Mitchell had no prior health problems and heat was not a factor. Byhalia won the contest, 28-7.

Dennis takes Stage One of Spanish Vuelta — Australian rider Rohan Dennis won the time trial on Stage One of the Spanish Vuelta on Saturday, while Michal Kwiatkowski of Sky grabbed an early advantage over other team leaders. Dennis powered his way through the 4.9-mile course in the coastal city of Malaga in 9 minutes, 39 seconds. Dennis led the Giro d’Italia for four days in May. Kwiatkowski produced the second fastest time, six seconds behind Dennis. The 28-year-old Dennis also wore the red leader’s jersey after Stage One of last year’s Vuelta, when his BMC team won the opening team time trial. Sunday’s Stage 2 is a hilly 163.5K ride inland from the seaside town of Marbella to a finish atop the Caminito del Rey climb. The three-week race finishes in Madrid on Sept. 16.
