A rundown of games and events to watch for locally and nationally from the world of sports (all times Pacific):
Monday
Tennis, U.S. Open at New York City: The 50th anniversary edition of the year’s championship gets underway, and ESPN will carry live action daily through the tournament. Spain’s Rafael Nadal is the reigning men’s champion. American Sloane Stephens was last year’s women’s winner, her first career Grand Slam. The women’s singles final is set for Sept. 8, the men’s final for Sept. 9.
Thursday
Major League Baseball, Seattle at Oakland, 7 p.m. (Root): The Mariners look to keep their playoff hopes alive as they open a four-game series against the surging A’s, who, along with the Houston Astros, make the West the most competitive division in the American League. When they return from the Bay Area, the Mariners play eight in a row at home against the Orioles, Yankees and Padres.
Friday
Prep football: The first Friday night of the season features home games for nine Central Oregon teams, including the Class 6A debuts of Mountain View (vs. Roseburg at 7 p.m.), Summit (vs. Beaverton at 7 p.m.) and Bend (vs. Barlow at 7:15 p.m.). Elsewhere, Redmond, Ridgeview, Sisters, Madras, Culver and Gilchrist are all also at home for their 2018 season openers.
Saturday
College football, Oregon State at Ohio State, 9 a.m. (ABC); Bowling Green at Oregon, 5 p.m. (Pac-12 Network): The Beavers face a daunting opener against the No. 5 Buckeyes in Jonathan Smith’s nationally televised debut as head coach. Later, the No. 24 Ducks will be prohibitive favorites at home against the Falcons as Mario Cristobal begins his first full season at the helm in Eugene.
Saturday-Sunday
Running, Sunriver Half Marathon for a Cause: Four races over two days make up this benefit for the St. Charles Cancer Center. Saturday’s events start with a 10K race at 8:30 a.m., followed by a 5K at 8:50 a.m. and a Kids Dash at 10:30 a.m. The featured race is Sunday’s half marathon, which starts at 7:30 a.m. For more information, go to www.sunrivermarathon.com.
