The Sisters Ranger District of the Deschutes National Forest has reopened the popular Black Crater Trail, which was closed during the aftermath of the Milli Fire last year.
The trail and trailhead, located off McKenzie Pass Highway, experienced intense fire activity on a steep mountain slope during the 2017 fire, according to a release from the U.S. Forest Service. Forest Service crews assessed the condition of the trail earlier this summer and worked with nonprofit partners including the Sisters Trail Alliance and Sawyers with Attitude to remove dead, downed and hazardous trees on and near the trail, along with completing drainage work in the area.
The Oregon Department of Transportation used heavy equipment to clean out sediment and improve conditions at the trailhead, according to the release.
There are many standing dead trees along the trail that will not be removed, and visitors should be aware of their surroundings when traveling through burned areas, according to the release.
