The Bend man police have accused of having a “carnal motive” when he stole more than $1,000 worth in coats pleaded guilty Monday in Deschutes County Circuit Court.

In late 2015, Mark Mahoney, 52, was alleged to have stolen 10 coats from Central Oregon Community College and one from Oregon State University-Cascades. A Bend Police spokesman said at the time the items were smaller, women’s coats, and Mahoney had used them for “sexual gratification.”

Mahoney’s attorney, Casey Baxter, filed a motion to plead guilty Friday.

Mahoney was initially charged with three counts of second-degree theft and two charges of second-degree criminal mischief.

Mahoney pleaded guilty to one charge of first-degree theft. In exchange, he will serve two years supervised probation and must successfully complete an 18-month mental health counseling program. If he completes the court-ordered treatment, his offense would be treated as a misdemeanor.

He could have received up to five years in prison for the charges in his indictment.

A judge must still approve the proposed plea. Mahoney’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 10.
