Rodgers signs hefty new deal — Aaron Rodgers is getting another big deal. The two-time NFL MVP and Green Bay Packers agreed to terms Wednesday on a four-year extension that would keep Rodgers under contract through the 2023 season. The four-year deal is worth $134 million, with more than $100 million in guaranteed money. Rodgers’ new annual average salary of $33.5 million per year would eclipse Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan’s five-year extension worth $30 million a year.Rodgers turns 35 in December. He signed his previous extension, a five-year deal worth $110 million, before the 2013 season. Rodgers is healthy again after being limited to seven games last year because of a right collarbone injury. Green Bay flopped without him.

Bridgewater sent to the Big Easy — With the likelihood growing stronger the Jets have settled on first-round draft pick Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback, the team traded quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to the Saints for a third-round 2019 draft pick on Wednesday. Bridgewater signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Jets in the offseason, and he looked terrific in practice and the preseason after coming all the way back from a devastating knee injury in 2016. Darnold developed rapidly through the offseason and training camp. He is expected to enter the season as the starter after getting most of the of first-team reps in practice and games. Josh McCown returned on a one-year, $10 million deal after starting most of last season. He was the presumptive starter coming into training camp. He played only one series in the preseason as the Jets attempted to get a more definitive look at Darnold. While Darnold looked comfortable in the offense, Bridgewater became an attractive quarterback for a team in need.

CYCLING

Boswell keeps moving — French rider Rudy Molard took the overall lead of the Spanish Vuelta Wednesday, while Australia’s Simon Clarke won the fifth stage. Bend’s Ian Boswell is still competing, despite a crash on Tuesday. Molard’s strong performance in the mountainous stage of nearly 190 kilometers (120 miles) from Granada to Roquetas de Mar gave the Frenchman a 41-second lead over Kwiatkowski in the overall standings, with Emanuel Buchmann 48 seconds off the pace. Thursday’s sixth stage is a flat ride of 155.7 kilometers (96.7 miles) from Huercal-Overa to San Javier in the country’s southeast region.
