La Pine headed to state semifinals

LA PINE — For the first time since 1983, and just the second time ever, La Pine is headed to the baseball state semifinals.

And all the Hawks needed was something they had done all year: put together one big inning.

Held to just three hits over the first five innings Saturday, La Pine got back-to-back singles from brothers Ben and Adam Plant to lead off the bottom of the sixth. A walk to Jake Farnsworth loaded the bases, and Angelo Roes doubled in two runs to cut a four-run deficit in half. Then, Eddie Price teed off on his first career home run — a drive that was nearly caught at the fence by Pleasant Hill’s left fielder — giving the Hawks a 5-4 lead heading into the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, Farnsworth, in his second inning of relief, walked consecutive batters with one out. But a strikeout was followed by a fly out to right field, securing for La Pine a 5-4 win over Mountain Valley Conference foe Pleasant Hill in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A playoffs.

“It was pretty crazy,” said Hawks coach Bo DeForest. “People rushed the field. It was the most people I’ve ever seen at our field. Nobody wanted to leave. Everyone just hung out for an hour and a half talking on the field.”

With the win, No. 4 seed La Pine (22-4) earned a semifinal berth against No. 1 Taft, which La Pine defeated 8-5 on March 27. Start time for Tuesday’s game at Taft in Lincoln City is 4 p.m.

Saturday’s quarterfinal matchup was the fifth time La Pine squared off against No. 5 Pleasant Hill this season — they split the first four meetings, Pleasant Hill winning in the MVC championship game on May 18. It was also the second straight year the two teams matched up in the quarterfinals. Last season, also at La Pine, the Billies upended their conference rivals to move on to the semis.

The Hawks were not about to let history repeat itself. And that sixth-inning eruption assured La Pine some revenge.

“It’s a pretty big relief,” DeForest said. “I’m just really happy for the program. It’s great.”

Adam Plant went 2-for-3 for the Hawks, while Ben Plant, Roes, Price and Alex Farnsworth contributed with one hit apiece. La Pine won its second game of the state playoffs — something no La Pine team had ever done. As a result, the Hawks are one win away from reaching their first state final.

“Right now, we’re still kind of soaking it in and trying to figure out what happened,” DeForest said. “It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever been a part of. … This game was huge. Obviously we have to show up at Taft and play, but we feel pretty confident, I think, without being overly confident.”
