TRACK & FIELD

IAAF Council member banned in Nike case — David Okeyo of Kenya, an IAAF Council member, was banned from track and field for life Thursday for his role in diverting hundreds of thousands of dollars of sponsorship money from Nike for his and others’ personal use. It was another case pointing to deep-rooted graft in the sport in Kenya, which has been the most successful distance-running nation in the world for decades but is seeing that reputation eroded by a series of doping and corruption scandals. Okeyo, the former secretary general and a vice president of the Kenyan track federation, is also facing charges of extorting money from athletes in a separate IAAF ethics case that has links to the East African country’s doping crisis. Okeyo was guilty of breaching the IAAF’s ethics code on 10 occasions and “over a long period of time,” a three-member IAAF ethics panel said. As well as his life ban, Okeyo was fined $50,000 and ordered to pay another $100,000 in legal costs to the IAAF. He was also formally expelled as an IAAF Council member.

CYCLING

Bouhanni wins Vuelta’s Stage 6, Molard keeps lead — One day after finishing last, Nacer Bouhanni rebounded in fine fashion by sprinting to win the sixth stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Thursday. FDJ rider Rudy Molard kept the lead for a second straight day after finishing shortly behind fellow Frenchman Bouhanni. Bouhanni claimed the win for his Cofidis team in just under four hours by edging the closest of five rivals by a wheel length in the mostly flat 155.7-kilometer (96.7-mile) ride from Huercal-Overa to San Javier along the dry and rocky southeastern coast.

BASKETBALL

David West retires after a 15-year NBA career — David West, a key big man and snazzy passer who had a knack for providing a timely lift off the bench during the Golden State Warriors’ past two championship seasons, retired Thursday. West’s Twitter announcement — one day after his 38th birthday — was not a surprise as he made it clear he would take some time after the team’s latest title run to contemplate calling it a career.
