Bend Police arrested a 50-year-old man Saturday at Sawyer Park on suspicion of multiple sex crimes involving a juvenile he allegedly contacted online.
Gregory Michael Thoma of northeast Bend is charged with third-degree rape, three counts of third-degree sodomy, sex abuse in the second and third degrees, online sexual corruption of a minor and luring a minor for sexual conduct, Sgt. Robert Jones stated in a press release.
Thoma has long been affiliated with Second Street Theater, which was co-founded by his mother, Marilyn Thoma, and is operated by his wife. Gregory Thoma is listed as president of Stage Right Productions, the nonprofit organization that owns Second Street, Secretary of State business records show.
Police began their investigation Thursday. They learned that a child under 16 connected with a 50-year-old man online. Jones would not say which website or app Thoma and the juvenile were using.
The man, later identified as Thoma, met with the juvenile at the juvenile’s residence, where police said he committed multiple sex crimes. Thoma kept in communication with the juvenile after the incident, Jones said.
After the arrest, search warrants were served on Thoma’s vehicle, home and place of business, Jones said.
Thoma was released from Deschutes County Jail Sunday afternoon, a Deschutes County jail official said.
