Summit overcame a stout Cougar defense to defeat Mountain View 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18 in a Class 6A Mountain Valley Conference volleyball match Tuesday night at Mountain View High School.

Emily Olson led the Storm (2-0 MVC) with 12 kills, and Tatum Elshire added 12 digs.

Kendall Carlson had a .462 hitting percentage and Harper Justema had a .385 hitting percentage and four blocks for Summit, as the Storm worked hard to hit balls around Mountain View’s Jasmine Martin, who finished with seven blocks and 13 kills.

“We struggled a bit because Mountain View’s defense was a force tonight,” said Summit coach Shawnee Hayes. “They really made us work hard to get balls to hit the ground. Jasmine Martin is a stud hitter, so trying to get around her and their defense was tough. But we did a good job of that.”

Hayes also noted the play of Hannah Sauer, whom she called the Storm’s “go-to player on the court.”

The Cougars (1-1 MVC) finished with 67 digs as a team, as Brooklyn Heinrick accounted for 16 of those and Ashley Welker had 12. Heinrick also had 11 kills, two blocks and two aces.

Hayes said she was pleased with the way Summit played together as a team.

“The key for us was speeding up our offense and shutting down Jasmine,” Hayes said.

Both teams are back in MVC action Thursday. The Cougars are at home to face Sprague of Salem, and the Storm travel to Keizer to take on McNary.
