Portland six-piece hip-hop/soul/funk band Speaker Minds has become a regular presence in Bend in recent years, often performing with like-minded, socially conscious MC Mosley Wotta (in 2016, I named the group the only non-local highlight at the Bend Roots Revival). Led by rapper Randal Wyatt and powerhouse singer Adrian Adel and backed by a powerhouse rhythm section, Speaker Minds covers a lot of ground even by modern music’s genre-mashing standards.

This year’s “Wastelands” EP starts out with old-school funk (“Funk Rescuers Too”) before touching on garage (the title track) and jazz-inflected soul (“Vapors”), while Wyatt’s rhymes espouse community involvement and awareness. The group dances back to Volcanic Theatre Pub on Friday for another double-bill with Wotta.
