Garnett sues accountant over $77M lost — Kevin Garnett is suing an accountant and his firm, alleging they helped a wealth manager steal $77 million from the retired Minnesota Timberwolves and Boston Celtics star. The federal malpractice lawsuit alleges Kentucky-based accountant Michael Wertheim and Welenken CPAs enabled Charles Banks IV of Atlanta to defraud Garnett through businesses in which Garnett and Banks shared an interest. The lawsuit contends Wertheim “possessed actual knowledge that Banks was helping himself to millions of dollars of Garnett’s money and did nothing about it.” Defense attorney Greg Simpson said his clients deny the allegations and will fight the suit. Banks was not named as a defendant. Banks was sentenced last year to four years in federal prison for defrauding another former NBA star, retired San Antonio Spurs player Tim Duncan.
Police: 2 FIU football players shot — Two FIU football players were shot Thursday afternoon, and police said they were looking for who was responsible. Opa-locka police chief James Dobson identified the players as running back Anthony Jones and offensive lineman Mershawn Miller. Jones was shot in the face and back. Miller was shot in the arm. They were taken to Ryder Trauma Center. Dobson said the players are stable, and the injuries were not life-threatening. Police believe Jones and Miller were visiting a friend in Opa-locka when someone in another car opened fire and sped away. Jones sat out last season with injury and returned to the lineup in a big way in FIU’s opener, starting at running back and scoring two touchdowns in last weekend’s 38-28 loss to Indiana. Miller is a redshirt freshman who appeared in the Indiana game as a reserve. FIU plays at Old Dominion Saturday.
