2 dead along Oregon Coast — A wave hit two recent immigrants from China as they visited the Oregon Coast, sweeping them out into the ocean and killing them. Miaochan Chen, 49, and Wenjun Zhu, 41, of Lake Oswego, died Sunday; their 10-year-old daughter was unharmed, Oregon State Police said Monday. The family had been picnicking near Depoe Bay when they took a trail down to rocks overlooking the ocean. A wave washed over the rocks, engulfing the couple. A Coast Guard helicopter and boat searched, and they were found and helicoptered from the ocean to a nearby state park. The family immigrated in July. A state agency placed their daughter into a local foster home.

Eugene man shot by police files federal lawsuit — A Eugene man shot by police and later convicted of a crime for raising a gun toward an officer during the incident has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Eugene, a police dispatcher and two officers. Edgar T. Rodriguez, 29, was shot multiple times Sept. 10, 2016, after he called 911 to report that a male visitor was acting “insane.” Rodriguez went outside holding a .50-caliber pistol and was shot by two responding officers. One testified at trial that Rodriguez raised the pistol at him. Rodriguez says he had taken the gun out of his apartment to get it away from his out-of-control visitor. Rodriguez is a military veteran who served in Iraq as a member of the Oregon National Guard.

Shelter animals flown from Oklahoma to Oregon — The latest rescue flight commissioned by a group called Fetch Fido a Flight landed in Oregon over the weekend, carrying 125 pets that were living at high-kill shelters in Oklahoma. The flight was the 16th one by Fetch Fido a Flight, which flies animals from those shelters in Oklahoma to Oregon no-kill shelters. These 108 dogs and 17 cats arrived in Salem over the weekend and will be housed at a Humane Society south of Albany, where they will soon be up for adoption.
