Parents of concussed Oregon teen sue school district — The parents of a 17-year-old Oregon high school student have filed a $38 million lawsuit against the Hermiston School District, claiming it failed to properly respond to a concussion their son suffered during a football game and now he has permanent brain damage. Athletic officials at Hermiston High School did not treat Connor Martin or tell his parents about a concussion he suffered in a helmet-to-helmet collision during a September 2016 junior varsity football game, the suit says. The boy was 15 then. The district’s athletic trainer cleared the teen to play four days later, despite lingering symptoms of concussion, the suit says.  At a game in October 2016, he hit his head repeatedly and suffered injuries that knocked him unconscious, exacerbating the earlier concussion, according to the lawsuit. Today, Martin still suffers from headaches, vision problems, light sensitivity, balance problems that have caused him to fall and break his nose and brain damage that prevents him from returning to school full time, the lawsuit says.

Rookie Pettis in line for start for 49ers — With Marquise Goodwin being ruled out for Sunday’s game against Detroit, San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Dante Pettis is slated for his first NFL start. Coach Kyle Shanahan made that announcement Friday after Goodwin missed the entire week of practice with a bruised thigh suffered in last week’s loss at Minnesota. Pettis, a second-round pick out of Washington who caught a 22-yard touchdown pass against the Vikings, will start opposite veteran Pierre Garcon. Another rookie, seventh-round pick Richie James Jr., will be added to the 53-man active roster after being inactive in the opener.

Yates on verge of winning Spanish Vuelta — Simon Yates moved closer to winning the Spanish Vuelta for the first time after gaining more than a minute on Alejandro Valverde in Friday’s 19th stage, which was won by Thibaut Pinot. Pinot outlasted Yates at the end of the final climb in the tiny nation of Andorra, crossing the line five seconds ahead of the British rider for his second stage win in this year’s Vuelta. Valverde finished eighth, more than a minute behind. Yates will take a lead of 1 minute, 38 seconds over Valverde into Saturday’s 60.4-mile 20th stage, a short but very demanding ride over six categorized climbs. The three-week Grand Tour race ends Sunday in Madrid. Nairo Quintana had a punctured tire with less than5 miles to go and dropped more than four minutes off the lead, virtually out of contention. Bend’s Ian Boswell finished the 19th stage in 110th place, 20:14 behind Pinot. Overall, Boswell, who rides for team Katusha Alpecin, is in 130th place, 4:06:34 behind Yates.
