CYCLING

Yates completes Grand Tour sweep for Britain — Simon Yates won his first Grand Tour title after a largely ceremonial ride into Madrid in the final stage of the Spanish Vuelta on Sunday. The 26-year-old Englishman was dominant throughout the three-week race across Spain, and he secured the victory after a last stage during which riders did not attack the leaders in keeping with cycling tradition. Yates’ Vuelta title means Britain has swept the three Grand Tours. Geraint Thomas of Wales won the Tour de France in July, and Kenyan-born British rider Chris Froome won the Giro d’Italia in May. Froome was the defending Vuelta champion and also won the Tour de France last year, meaning Britain has five straight Grand Tour victories. Italian rider Elia Viviani won the final sprint for his third stage win in this year’s Vuelta, with Peter Sagan close behind him. Bend’s Ian Boswell, riding for Katusha Alpecin, was 135th in the final stage and finished 126th overall.

RUNNING

World marathon record falls in Berlin — Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge set a marathon world record, winning the Berlin race in 2 hours, 1 minute, 39 seconds on Sunday. Organizers initially put Kipchoge’s time at 2 hours, 1 minute, 40 seconds, but they later reduced it by one second. The 33-year-old broke the previous world record set in Berlin by fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto in 2014 by a minute and 18 seconds. “I lack words to describe this day,” Kipchoge said after becoming the first person to finish a marathon in less than 2:02. “They say you miss two times but you can’t miss the third time,” he said in reference to his two previous failed attempts to break the world record in Berlin. The Kenyan defended his 2017 title in the German capital, pulling ahead of other runners early on amid perfect conditions. Mild temperatures and little to no wind gave the runners of the 45th Berlin Marathon an advantage over last year, when rain slowed the race. Berlin’s Amos Kipruto came second in 2:06:23, followed by a third Kenyan, former world-record holder Wilson Kipsang, in 2:06:48.

RODEO

Brazile wins record 6th all-around Pendleton title — Trevor Brazile made some rodeo history at the 108th Pendleton Round-Up. The Decatur, Texas, cowboy won the Round-Up’s all-around title for the sixth time, topping the record set by Yakima Canutt, who won his fifth and final Pendleton all-around title in 1923. Brazile, a 41-year-old roping specialist, claimed his championship saddle and silver buckle Saturday after the final performance of the four-day rodeo. Event winners at the 2018 Round-Up included Canadian Orin Larsen, of Inglis, Manitoba, in bareback riding; J.C. Malone, of Plain City, Utah, in calf roping; Jesse Wright, of Milford, Utah, in saddle bronc riding; Sterling Lambert, of Fallon, Nevada, in steer wrestling; header Chad Masters, of Cedar Hill, Tennessee, and heeler Tyler Worley, of Berryville, Arkansas, in team roping; Jordan Wacey Spears, of Redding, California, in bull riding; Cheyenne Allan, of Mabton, Washington, in barrel racing; and Chris Glover, of Keenesburg, Colorado, in steer roping.

BASKETBALL

Wade returning to Heat for final season — Retirement needs to wait for Dwyane Wade, who announced Sunday night in a video taped earlier in the day that he is returning for a 16th and final NBA season. He basically spent the entirety of the last four months weighing his options, and retirement was a real possibility in his mind. “I’ve always did things my way,” said Wade, who is expected to sign a $2.4 million, one-year deal with Miami later this week. “Whether they’ve been good or whether they’ve been bad, I got here because I’ve done things the way that I feel is right for me and right for my family. And what I feel is right … I feel it’s right to ask you guys to join me for one last dance, for one last season.” Wade, 36, is Miami’s career leader in points, assists, steals and games played. He spent 2016-17 in his hometown of Chicago, then began last season with Cleveland. Wade returned to the Heat in a trade last February, appearing in 26 games including playoffs, enamoring Miami again even while coming off the bench and averaging 12.9 points.
