Four weeks ago, Jamie “Boggy” Sykes — drummer for local noise/punk band Scary Busey and formerly of doom metal bands Thorr’s Hammer and Burning Witch — was diagnosed with diverticulitis after experiencing stabbing stomach pain. More concerning, a CT scan revealed a mass inside his kidney, and he will undergo surgery to remove it Oct. 2. He will be out of commission at Breedlove Guitars, where he’s worked as a luthier for the last five years, from four to six weeks — and he won’t be able to play drums for possibly six months, he said.
To help him and his wife out, Scary Busey rallied the local music scene for a benefit show at J&J Bar and Grill on Wednesday. Local bands of all genres will pitch in, including: Balkan folk-rock-jazz combo Alovitiman, rockabilly/punk trio Boxcar Stringband, alt-rock band Bony Chanterelle, stoner rockers Solo Viaje and power pop/indie group Cosmonautical. Proceeds from donations and a raffle, including items donated by Ranch Records, El Sancho, Oregrown, Recycle Music and more, will all go to Sykes (also visit gofundme.com/jamie039s-organ-removal-fund to donate). Breedlove provided a one-of-a-kind guitar that will be raffled or auctioned off, according to members of Scary Busey.
Scary Busey won’t perform this show, but music fans have a couple of chances this weekend to catch Sykes in action with the band. The quartet will open for Die Like Gentlemen and Strange Rover at The Capitol on Thursday and will perform a free show with The Kronk Men and Solo Viaje at M&J Tavern on Saturday.
Benefit for Boggy featuring Alovitiman, Boxcar Stringband, Bony Chanterelle, Solo Viaje and Cosmonautical: 6 p.m. Wednesday; $5 suggested donation; ages 21 and older after 8 p.m.; J&J Bar and Grill, 125 NW Oregon Ave., Bend; bit.ly/bbboggy, gofundme.com/jamie039s-organ-removal-fund or 541-797-0026.
