A 64-year-old hiker was taken by helicopter to a local hospital after injuring himself in a fall near Lewis Glacier on Sunday.
Portland resident Keith Doherty was hiking near South Sister around 1 p.m. when he suffered the injury that prevented him from continuing on the trail without assistance, according to a press release from the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.
After a call for help was made, volunteers with the sheriff’s Search and Rescue team were dropped off by Air Link air ambulance at the top of South Sister, where they walked approximately a half mile down a scree slope to evaluate Doherty.
Volunteers placed the man in a wheeled litter and moved him a mile and a half to an open area where the Air Link helicopter picked him up and took him to St. Charles Bend, where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening.
