Alt-rock/reggae/rap band Dirty Heads started racking up high-profile collaborations from the get-go. Its 2008 debut album, “Any Port in a Storm,” featured guest spots from pianist Billy Preston (known for playing with The Beatles, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles and more), Latin jazz percussionist Alex Acuña, Guns N’ Roses’ Slash and Avenged Sevenfold singer M. Shadows; while its biggest hit, 2010’s “Lay Me Down,” included guest vocals from longtime friend, Sublime with Rome vocalist Rome Ramirez.
Clearly, Dirty Heads isn’t afraid of mashing up genres, and it continued this experimentation on last year’s album “Swim Team.” Single “Celebrate” grew out of a song already in progress by Texas indie rock band The Unlikely Candidates — Dirty Heads added their verses to the melancholy chorus hook. The reverse happened with the song “Visions” — the band gave the song to Maroon 5 to record as a bonus track on recent album “Red Pill Blues,” then released its version as a single earlier this year.
“That was the first time that we have done it in that way, so it was definitely a different experience, but it was cool because we just got to kind of jump onto something that was already in creation that we just thought was awesome,” guitarist and band co-founder Dustin “Duddy B” Bushnell said recently from his home in Huntington Beach, California. “We’re open to everything. We write in all different types of ways and we love working with other people, so I’m sure it’s something that we’ll do in the future.”
Dirty Heads last played Bend in 2012, at the Century Center. The band returns for a sold-out show to close out the alt-rock concert series at Oregon Spirit Distillers on Friday.
Dirty Heads, with Just Loud: 7 p.m. Friday, doors open at 6 p.m.; sold out; Oregon Spirit Distillers, 740 NE First St., Bend; bendticket.com or 541-382-0002.
